Day 17 - Maryland National Park

For the first time in my challenge, I had the company of another walker. Before we set off, he told me that I had better not break down on the trail because he was sure as hell not going to carry me out. Inspirational words. Thanks, Paul. 🤣
Maryland National Park is on the southern side of the NSW/QLD border, which we followed for a while today. The border is easy to find because it is the location of a rabbit fence designed to keep Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cotton-tail out of the Sunshine State.

Day 16 - Girraween National Park

I'm on a mission to help The Fred Hollows Foundation restore sight to many needlessly blind people around the world, and I would love it if you could help. Just $25 is all it takes to give someone their vision back, and thanks to the generous assistance of family and friends, we have already made it possible for sight to be restored to up to 61 people.

My goal is to walk 100 kilometres and raise $2,000 in the month of August in support of Fred's Big Run. Today's walk in Girraween National Park bumped my kilometres walked total up to 81, and the amount we have raised so far is $1,526.

In the language of the Kambubal people, Girraween means "place of flowers". It's a great name for this remarkable highlight of Queensland's Southern Downs and Granite Belt.

Day 14 - Bakers Road in Mount Colliery

It is such a pleasure to be able to complete so many of the kilometres of my challenge in the beautiful village where I live. What do I love so much about this place? The peace and quiet, and the vibe. A vibe captured beautifully by my lovely Lissa K Rummery in a piece she composed about our new home when it was still very much a work in progress. It's called "Baile an Aisling", which is Irish for "Home of the Dream".

Day 13 - O'Maras Road in Mount Colliery

After the longest walk of my challenge so far, I looked down at my toes and thought, I am pretty sure they're not meant to be that colour. I took myself off to the doctor, who looked me over and gave me his diagnosis in the form of a quote from Danny Kaye, "Life is a great big canvas; throw all the paint on it you can." With that learned nod of approval, I am back on the road again, stepping up to restore sight.

Retraction: My legal team has advised me that I cannot say my doctor quoted Danny Kaye... so.... um.... he didn't. Blood tests pending.

Day 10 - Lake Coolmunda

My dip into kayaking on the weekend saw the Fred's Big Run adjudicators scurrying for the rule book, and it turns out that kayaking kilometres are just as valid as those spent on your feet, so that's 14 more added to the tally. Yay! 😁

Day 8 - Mount Cordeaux

I saw an opportunity to spend some time with my head in the clouds, and I grabbed it with both hands. Reaching the top of Mount Cordeaux required the longest walk in my challenge so far, but it felt more like therapy than an obstacle to overcome.

"May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds." Edward Abbey

Day 6 - The River Walk in Warwick

They breed 'em tough in Warwick. Today, I met a young family who had managed to survive the depths of winter without a scarf or a beanie to their names. When I asked them how they had managed to do it, they looked at me with a waddle and a quack and said, "Pffft, get out of town!"

Day 5 - Gambubal Road in Mount Colliery

The stars of this walk were two Aussie battlers who unwittingly cause loads of good-natured argy-bargy in watering holes around the country. The sulphur-crested cockatoo is a much-loved larrikin to many, but a persistent pest to farmers, and the wattle has folk arguing about whether its official day is the 1st of August or the 1st of September. You can read more about that here. 👇

Day 4 - O'Maras Road in Mount Colliery

I raced home in my dying car to make sure I could squeeze in some kilometres before nightfall. While I didn't quite finish before dark, I was rewarded with the opportunity to wrap myself in the warm orange rays of the setting sun. 🤗

Day 3 - Bakers Road in Mount Colliery

Singing in the rain! 🎵🎶 Anyone who has heard me sing will be relieved to know I'm talking about the birds rather than myself. There were lots of happy melodies in the trees. 🦜

Day 2 - Bakers Road in Mount Colliery

I was delighted to have a chance encounter with a wild koala, but sad that it didn't seem too healthy. I hope it will be ok. It had gone by the time I could get help.

Day 1 - The Railway Walk in Warwick

This is one of the famed 5 Walks of Warwick, for which you can pick up a brochure from the Warwick QLD Visitor Information Centre. I didn't cover as much distance as I hoped, but I was running late for work. No pun intended.

I’m stepping up to restore sight!

I’m taking on Fred’s Big Run this August to STEP UP TO RESTORE SIGHT!

To be fair, I will mainly be walking rather than running, but there may be a little bit of running at the end if my dodgy old football-battered body can take it. The plan is to explore as many art, heritage, and national park walking trails in the Southern Downs & Granite Belt as possible, including iconic bushwalks such as 'The Pyramid' and 'The Steamers'.

My goal is to walk 100 kilometres and raise $1,500 for The Fred Hollows Foundation because right now, 9 out of 10 people who are blind don’t need to be...

And an operation that costs as little as $25 can help restore sight to someone who is needlessly blind, and change their life forever!

It would be amazing if you could please make a donation and support my challenge to give the gift of sight.

Thank you so much for your support.
