This will be my third year of raising funds for the Fred Hollows Foundation to help restore eye sight to people in need and help prevent avoidable blindness.

I have committed this year to do a 100 km walk over the month of August.

There are hundreds and thousands of people across the world who are at risk of losing sight due to inadequate medical facilities. As little as $25 could help these people from avoidable blindness.

In life we may take a number of things for granted - or may completely be unaware of the many challenges people face in certain parts of the world. Our “lived experiences” may serve as a powerful tool to raise awareness through sharing these real life stories.

The story I have with me to share today is about the three types of lamps that helped us to study and finish our homework during our school days. These were our best friends when we lived in conflict zones for years without electricity, and with an embargo on essential supplies including kerosene oil.

On days we would have adequate supplies coming through aid ships, we would have the luxury of lighting a hurricane lantern. When supplies run out, we would switch to chimney lamps; and when supplies are about to completely run out, we would move to the more risky “bottle lamps”.

The bottle lamp was an innovative local solution to counter the fuel shortage. It would have some water at the bottom of a “jam” bottle, with a sponge soaked in a little bit of kerosene oil on top of the water. A wick would then be connected to the sponge and light the study room - at times for the whole family to share at the same table.

The moral of the story is: if there is will, there is way to achieve anything. Whether it is a bottle lamp or a chimney lamp or a hurricane lamp, they all lit up the room sufficiently for us to get through with our homework. However these lamps would not have been of any help if people were to lose sight due to lack of treatment and medical facilities. There is nothing better than being able to help another person to gain sight so that they’d continue to be able to enjoy this beautiful world.
