Smashed, smashed, smashed !!

It's all done!  Yaaayi.

Thank you, my wonderful friends, for your generosity and support. I thought when I started out that with a bit of exercise through the month of August we might together raise $500 for the Fred Hollows foundation.

Instead you delivered a total of $2,126, while in the background I managed to jog, stumble and drag myself along 101 kilometres of suburban pathways (which, by the way, wasn't as monumentally challenging as I made it out to be, the forced running was in fact good for me, I needed the exercise).

Decades ago I ran across Fred Hollows & his team in remote Central Australia, way out west of Alice Springs. I saw how they worked, I saw the impact on Aboriginal communities over the subsequent years, & I saw how they sought to transfer expertise to local health workers. I think it's a good cause.

Thank you x

The picture is of me at the 101km finish line - a selfie taken as I broke through the tape, which unfortunately didn't capture the cheering crowds, the champagne stall, and the Mayor of Malvern Heights in her official faux ermine.

Icing on the cake

It is a beautiful day here, and the winter of our running discontent has now been made summer by the glorious sun of Malvern Heights. So no need for skins or sweaty stinky marathon jackets - singlet, shorts and shoes is all that's needed.

I've done a solid 20km over the weekend, but the big question is whether, sitting on a total of 95km, I can push my aching body through the remaining 5km to hit the 100km goal.

Can I do it? You bet, I'm pulling out all stops today - I reckon I'm 80% gym-bro supplements (see photo) and 20% determination, together that will get me there. Well, actually, to tell the truth, what will mostly get me there is not the supplementary powders, but rather the contents of the bowl that you can just see at the back of the picture - which contains the left-over lemon icing from the lemon poppyseed cake that my partner made over the weekend, and which I think fuelled about half of my weekend mileage.

Nonetheless, I am very open to any sponsorship offers from the supplement companies, especially since Asics have not yet given me a firm response to my initial suggestion that they might back me.

Help me finish !!!

It's been a while since I posted an update here - I can reassure you though, I have not been messing around, & in lieu of sitting around updating the blog I have been out pounding the streets surrounding Malvern Heights.

I'm now at 71km, and have $1930 in donations,  but with only a few days to go the suspense is building - can we hit the $2,000 donations target ?, can I get the remaining 29km under my belt (or rather under my running shoes) before midnight next Monday?

You can help me get there - please. Every donation, no matter how small, gets me closer to the target. Every donation pushes me along another kilometre.

So please, hit the donation button, and help drag me over that finish line.

The photo for this blog is of course for dramatic illustrative purposes and is not me, but is rather of the 2026 Boston Marathon, showing Aaron Beggs (right) & Robson De Oliviera helping Ajay Haridasse cross the finish line.

PBs everywhere

I was kind of hoping that we would get torrential unrunnable rain all day Saturday, but the weather gods let me down, so I got into my running gear, and what is (in my case) laughingly referred to as a 'marathon' jacket, and again braved the monsoonal downpour outside of Malvern Heights.

And, hey presto, on the back of my Friday rest day, & buoyed up by your generous sponsorship - thank you so much xo - I did, distance wise, a PB for the run so far. A big 8km done and dusted. That's 23km in total, nearly a quarter of the way, yaayi.

Time wise, though, I didn't really set the track on fire. In fact, in taking an out and back path, and zigzagging around a few blocks to build up the distance, I twice passed a woman walking her dogs, who I think - on the basis of some quick calculations in my running brain as to her possible route, and the associated times and distances, was walking her dogs at a faster pace than I was running !! Maybe she got a PB as well.

Although the wind was icy, by the end of the run I got so hot and sweaty in the so-called marathon jacket that it was like running in a sauna. I suppose that is why, despite many years of watching the big Olympic athletics events, I have, as evidenced by the above photo, never ever seen even one marathon runner in one of those things.

(Being in a post-truth world I am now able to confess that the photo doesn't prove anything, as it is AI generated, via Gemini, which I originally asked to put together a photo of a gender-balanced field of marathoners running in the rain. After its first attempt, which produced an all male field, it took another 3 tries to get the result published above, which is decidedly not the standard idea of gender balance. Something wrong with the wording of my prompts perhaps?).

It's meant to be a rest day

It's a rest day for me - or at least it will be if I can find a bed in the house that's not already occupied by a greyhound. I'm doing some stretching, doubling up on my intake of protein rich foods (eg. beer, pizza) and getting ready, in honour of double donation day yesterday, to ramp up my distances tomorrow.

I just wanted to say thanks again to all my lovely friends and Malvern Heights neighbours for your very generous support.  I'm quite overwhelmed, my aching quads thank you.

Pipped at the post

I had commitments most of the day yesterday, so it was getting on for 4pm, and cold and windy, before I could get home and get my running gear on. It took a while to get started - I thought the second day was difficult, but the third day was like trying to kick start the old Honda 600XR I used to ride in the desert years ago (which, coincidentally is where I ran into Fred Hollows and his team, but that's a story for another day).

Anyway that's another 5km up on the board. Getting to the end of it, as I hit the home stretch I thought I was running pretty well for an old bloke, only to be beaten to the ribbon by a ring-in who came from nowhere in the last 50 metres - I guess sometimes you just can't win.

The difficult second day

It was freezing again in Malvern Heights this morning, but my Health & Training app was pushing me out the door telling me that I was perfectly placed for a solid run, and I was remembering how much I loved my new shoes (photo attached, I'm happy btw to accept any sponsorship deal that Asics might send in my direction) so I hit the streets again.

It was a good day to keep moving - warm enough while running, cold enough to ice you up straight away if you stopped - so I knocked out another leisurely 5km. 10 done now, 90 to go.

Thank you to those lovely people who have already so generously donated - I will think of you with every passing kilometre. Hey, and the rest of you tightwads had better pony up soon :-)

Brand new runners, same old body

It was cold and a bit nippy here in Adelaide this morning, but nothing was going to stop me doing me first 5km - on a very pleasant circuit heading out of Malvern Heights and along the paths of Unley & Parkside, greatly aided by a brand new pair of runners. A leisurely run to start with, & with 5km down & 95 to go I've got plenty of time to crank up the pace.

Photos tomorrow !

I’m stepping up to restore sight!

I’m taking on Fred’s Big Run this August to STEP UP TO RESTORE SIGHT! My goal is to raise funds for The Fred Hollows Foundation to continue the legacy of an Australian legend, Fred Hollows.

I'm going to run 100km this month, but I'm not asking you to dig too deep into your pockets.

So if you can support me at 10c per kilometre, for a total of $10, that's all I need. And if I can find, nag or blackmail enough friends into donating that much, then I will easily hit my target.

Right now, 9 out of 10 people who are blind don’t need to be... And an operation that costs as little as $25 can help restore sight to someone who is needlessly blind, and change their life forever!

Fred Hollows’ dream was to live in a world where no one was needlessly blind. Please sponsor my challenge in support of that aim.

Thank you
Ian x
